Gynecomastia (Enlarged Breasts)

What is gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is when the breasts get bigger because of extra breast tissue. Some chemotherapy medications and hormone therapies can cause gynecomastia. It can also cause pain, tenderness, swelling, and sensitive nipples. It usually goes away when treatment ends. 

How is gynecomastia treated?

Most of this time, gynecomastia doesn't need treatment.  If another health problem is causing it, treating that issue may help. If a medication you are taking is the cause, your provider may talk with you about stopping the medication.

When should I call my provider?

Gynecomastia can be hard on your body image and emotions. Talk with your provider about these feelings and if breast swelling and pain are bothering you.
