OncoLink Rating:

From diagnosis to terminal disease, "Psychosocial Nursing Care Along the Cancer Continuum" provides a comprehensive view of the impact of cancer on the individual, family, and society. This text is a must for all nurses, educators and students who provide cancer care. It incorporates all practice settings: ambulatory care, office, home, inpatient, and hospice to accurately portray cultural familial systems; and offers intervention for the nurse to incorporate based upon conceptual issues that are rooted in coping and adaptational strategies. Age, gender, prognosis, and spirituality data gathered from various case studies offer insight as well as practical application. There is even a chapter designated "Special Topics" that discusses hot topics of today, for example physician-assisted suicide, substance abuse, alternative and complementary therapies, and managed care, as well as "stress management for oncology nurses" and "caring for the family caregiver."

The authors come from a wide variety of oncological experience and are applauded for defining nursing as pivotal in helping patients and families cope effectively.
