After Cancer

She rarely talks about it these days,
except with her husband
and those in her support group.
She's learned that family members tend
to shift uncomfortably in chairs,
change the subject quickly
Friends have peeled away in layers;
the hard seed remains.
Only her grandmother, over 80 and
near enough to peer into
Death's kaleidoscope herself,
understands,
can see what she sees.
