Hematuria (Blood in the Urine)
What is hematuria?
Hematuria is blood in your urine (pee). You can have blood in your urine from:
- Urinary tract infection (UTI).
- Bladder infection.
- Kidney infection.
- Enlarged prostate.
- Cancer (kidney, bladder, or prostate).
- Radiation treatment.
- Chemotherapy treatments (cyclophosphamide, ifosfamide).
Symptoms of hematuria are pink, red, or brown colored urine. Hematuria is often painless.
How is hematuria treated?
Treatment of hematuria depends on what is causing it. Your care team will order tests to figure out why you are having hematuria. In the meantime, you should drink plenty of fluids. If you are getting cyclophosphamide or ifosfamide, your care team will tell you how to protect your bladder to prevent hematuria.
When should I contact my care team?
Tell your care team right away if you think you have blood in your urine, especially if you are getting chemotherapy.
