HPV: The Basics Human papilloma viruses (HPV) is a sexually transmitted virus. There are more than 150 types of HPV, of which about 40 can be transmitted sexually. Sexually active individuals have an 80-85% chance of being infected with HPV at some time in their lives. Most strains of HPV do not cause problems, but about 30 strains can lead to cancer.
