Overview

ScienceDirect is the world's largest scientific, technical and medical database. It is a rich journals collection supplemented by relevant bibliographic databases to expand literature searches further and a growing program of online reference works.

Born out of an Elsevier tradition in scholarly communication, ScienceDirect has always followed a vision of the digital library of the future. Today it offers one of the world's most advanced web delivery systems for scientific, technical and medical information.

About ScienceDirect

ScienceDirect users can:

  • access over 1800 scientific, technical and medical peer-reviewed journals
  • access >4 million abstracts with full text articles
  • search over 59 million abstracts from scientific articles
  • link out to articles from over 120 other publishers
  • access articles online before they appear in print, including "Articles in Press" which give rapid access to recently accepted articles
  • access multimedia features not available in print journals, such as video files, audio files, Excel spreadsheets and Word files

What Can I Access?

The content and functionality that you are able to see depends on whether you are a Guest User or a Licensed User.

Guest Users have access free of charge to the tables of contents and abstracts of all articles. Guest Users can also set up journal issue alerts and favorite journal lists. Guest Users can purchase full text articles of interest directly by credit card.

Licensed Users are automatically recognised as belonging to an institution that has a ScienceDirect license. Based on the needs of an institution, ScienceDirect can provide access either to the entire collection of full-text journals and secondary databases, or to only a specified selection. The availability of a journal at your institute is individuated in the publications view, by icons placed next to the journal title and volume (which signify either subscribed, non-subscribed, complimentary or partner website). Licensed Users have access to the full text articles of all journals that their institution subscribes to. It is also optional for your institute to give you access to non-subscribed journals via one of two payment methods:

  1. the fee is charged directly to your institute's account, or
  2. you purchase the article directly by using a credit card.

If you are unsure what is available at your institute please check with your librarian.
