There are an estimated 50 million surgeries performed in the United States each year. The majority are uncomplicated procedures that, once complete, allow the patient to return to life as they knew it before surgery. When the surgery is for a serious condition, such as cancer, things may be a bit more complicated. Although some patients do not have the luxury of waiting a few days before having surgery, most can afford to wait a few days, allowing the patient and family to better prepare.
