How do you know what foods are really good in terms of preventing cancer. It seems there is a new food every week that I should run out and fill my fridge with and then the next week the same food is no longer good for me!
Debra DeMille, MS, RD, CSO, Dietician at the Joan Karnell Cancer Center at Pennsylvania Hospital, responds:
Yes, the media mentions a new miracle food weekly. I think the message with that is to not jump too quickly to the hot new item. In addition, there will never be any one food that will prevent cancer. According to the American Institute for Cancer Research a diet that is primarily plant based is the best way to go. Variety is important when it comes to produce. For some fabulous recipes and the AICR quidelines, go to www.aicr.org. Be sure to monitor your body weight as well and try to achieve a healthy weight for you. Avoid extra bodyweight and stay physically active.
