Question

What NSAID is commonly recommended? My vet is currently recommending Neurontin and gabapentin. Might Tramadol be a better option in your experience?

Lili Duda, VMD, MBE, DACVR Veterinary Radiation Oncologist- University of Pennsylvania, responds:

Answer

We typically recommend a combination of medications, with frequent monitoring and adjustment as needed. There are several NSAIDs that are specifically approved for dogs, such as Deramaxx, Previcox, Rimadyl, Metacam, and others. Typically we start with an (if tolerated and medically safe) and tramadol, which is a very safe and effective drug. We will add medications such as Neurontin (a trade name for gabapentin) and amantadine. Typically Neurontin would not be used by itself for bone pain associated with a bone tumor.
