Low Iodine Diet & Mustard

Ultima Vez Modificado: 2 de diciembre del 2007

Question

Dear OncoLink "Ask The Experts,"

My sister is going to have radioiodine treatments and must be on the low sodium diet. My question is, can she use the spice dry mustard?

Answer

Katrina Claghorn, MS, RD, Registered Dietitian at the Abramson Cancer Center of the University of Pennsylvania, responds:

Mustard powder or seeds are allowed. However, store-bought or processed mustards are not allowed since there is a small possibility that there is iodized salt in the product.

Here is a homemade, low-iodine mustard recipe:

Blend 1/4 cup dry mustard with 2-3 tbsp water. Store in the refrigerator for up to a month.
