I Kissed My Father Late

I kissed my father late
and wondered . . . wondered
why those running board, afternoon deliveries
were so troublesome.

Newspapers and fathers were a chore
then, and meant to be taken for granted.

Six months is a long time to die
even if you are prepared--
or think you are.

I kissed my father late
but learned the essence
of his smile.
